Payment methods for your online store: which to offer and how to set them up

You can have the best product and the best photos, but if the customer can't find a convenient way to pay at checkout, the sale falls through. Payment methods are the last door before closing an order, and in small businesses they're often the least thought-out part.

The good news is that you don't need a complicated payment gateway to sell online. In this guide we review the methods most used by entrepreneurs in Latin America, when each one makes sense, and how to present them in your store so customers know from the start how to pay you.

Bank transfer or deposit

This is the most common method for businesses that sell on WhatsApp. The customer transfers from online banking or deposits at a branch, sends you the receipt, and you confirm the order. There are no processing fees and the money goes straight to your account.

To make it work, always share the same details: bank, account number, and account holder. Verify each payment in your banking app before delivering, because fake receipts exist. A small verification habit saves you a lot of headaches.

Cash on delivery

Cash on delivery is the favorite of customers who still distrust buying online: they pay only when the product is in their hands. Offering it can increase your sales, especially with new customers.

The risk is that the customer isn't home or changes their mind, and you lose the trip. To reduce it, confirm the order by message on delivery day, ask for the full address with landmarks, and consider requesting a deposit on large or custom orders.

Card payments

Many customers prefer paying by card, especially for larger purchases. If you have a card terminal to charge on delivery, or a payment link from your bank or processor, you can offer it as an option and widen your audience.

Keep in mind these services charge a fee per transaction. Include it in your pricing so you don't lose margin without noticing.

Mobile payments and digital wallets

In several countries in the region, mobile wallets and phone payments are growing fast because they're instant and don't require a traditional bank account. If your customers use them, offering them removes an important barrier.

As with transfers, ask for the receipt and verify the money arrived before shipping.

PayPal for customers abroad

If you sell to customers in other countries or to relatives sending gifts from abroad, PayPal is a well-known, trusted option. The customer pays in dollars with their account or card and you receive the money in your PayPal account.

In Vallen you only need your PayPal username. The store converts the total from your local currency to dollars approximately and generates a payment link with the amount ready, so the customer doesn't have to calculate anything.

How to show your payment methods in the store

Customers should know how they can pay before sending the order, not after. In Vallen you turn on each method with a switch in your store settings: bank transfer with your details, cash, card, mobile payment, or PayPal. When ordering, the customer picks the one they prefer.

The order reaches you with the chosen method, so you know right away which details to send or whether to bring change. Fewer questions, fewer mistakes, and faster sales.

  • Offer between two and four methods, no more
  • Show methods before the customer confirms
  • Verify every payment before shipping
  • Ask for a deposit on custom or large orders

There's no perfect payment method: there's the combination your customers already use. For most small businesses, transfer plus cash on delivery covers almost everything, and PayPal or card adds the people who buy from far away or prefer paying on credit.

Choose your methods, show them clearly in your store, and verify every payment. That way you get paid faster and with less risk.
